THE COMMITTEE OF THE 52nd AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL SQUARE DANCE CONVENTION
TONY HOOPER (Convenor / Venue Manager) I first started Square Dancing in 1964 in UK after being conned into going by our neighbour with Tommy Cavanough as Caller, I first called in 1967.On arrival in Australia in 1967 we quickly found out where to continue square dancing & have never stopped. My first National was 1969 in Melbourne, since then I have attended some 28 Nationals.I have served on Committees for several Nationals as well as State Society President, National Society Vice President, Sec/Treasurer Tas Callers Assoc. Convenor of State ConventionsI started a club in 1989 in Tassie after moving there from SA, then on to Qld & another club. I was involved in preparing a submission for a National in Darwin in 1987 for 1992, but the timing was wrong as the support needed was not there. This time with so much support from individuals as well as organizations the 52 National will be held in Darwin.
LORRAINE DAVEY (Secretary) I have been dancing since I was a teenager, when my parents insisted I join them at Jack Murphy's dance. Since that time, I have always been involved in the activity, with time off for children and travelling. I have not been on a National Committee before in an official capacity and I am excited at the prospect of going to Darwin and dancing at the 'Top End'. This Committee is planning some interesting events and we believe it will be a memorable Convention.
CHRISTINE HOOPER (Publicity) I migrated from U.K to Tasmania with my parents & brother in 1949.My first experience of square dancing was in the early 1950's when my parents Nora & Don Close started the New Tasmanians Club for new migrants in Devonport. My parents taught ballroom dancing & 1 square dance from a record, that dance was 'Oh Johnny' which most people will remember. That was all the square dancing I did until 1981 when Tassie Twirlers in conjuction with the "'Life be in it" program had a 'Try Square Dance Night' and I was hooked.I attended my 1st National Convention in Canberra in 1984, the 25th National.I represented the North West Coast on the Tasmanian Square Dance Society and was Publicity Officer on a State Convention Committee, held in Devonport. Tony & I along with our club, North West Coasters, ran a very successful weekend with guest Buddy Weaver from Hawaii. I look forward to the many challenges working towards the Darwin Square Dance Convention in 2011.
JEFF VAN SAMBEECK (Program Manager) I started square dancing in February 1976. 18 Months later I took up calling. I have called continuously for the Dianella Rangers since January 1979 (Mainstream) Over the years I have entered into the Plus area and eventually the Advanced level where I have called both A1 and A2 programs since the early 1990’s. I have been involved at executive level in our local Callers Association for all but a couple of years, including the Presidency, as Training Officer and now as Secretary. My involvement has also included being a Board member of the ACF since 2004, the past 3 years as Chairman. I have conducted three State Conventions and been involved in all but a few. At last count I have attended 19 National Square Dance Conventions. I am looking forward to the Darwin National to be the highlight of my calling career.
MIKE DAVEY (Program Manager) Mike has been calling for many years. He has been on the committee of a number of National Conventions that have been held in Victoria in the role of Program Manager, so he brings a lot of experience to the role.
MARILYN VAN SAMBEECK (Registrations) I have been square dancing since 1993 and have embraced it with joy, not really even knowing what square dancing was when I started learning. During these years, I have been fortunate to learn and dance Mainstream, Plus, A1 & A2 levels. I am now married to Jeff, a Square Dance Caller in the West for 32 years. I have been a committee member of our local club since 2001, and I am dedicated and committed to the challenge of bringing a National Convention in Darwin to people of Australia and indeed the world.
PATRICIA WATSON (Treasurer) I starting dancing 1983 at Drifter, I was made Life Member in 2005. Having held various committee positions including, Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President. I have also been Assistant Treasurer and Treasurer for The Square Dance Society of WA, along with 6 years on the function committee, helping to run State Conventions. I attend my first National in 1988 ‘Sydney’ in the same year I danced at the New Zealand National and at The Expo. So far 11 nationals and still counting! As I am the Treasurer you might like to know I am a Member of The National Institute of Accountants. By the time we all get together for a lot of fun and a great dance in Darwin I will have completed my Master in Commerce and become a Professional Member of the NIA.
PETER WATSON (Transport) I learnt to square dance in 1990 being taught by Don Gauci. I danced at Greenfinches until 2000 when my wife first laid her eyes on me at 2000 International Dance in Perth and swept me off my feet. She couldn’t help herself. She lured me to her club and that is where I have been a member ever since. I have served on Drifters committee as a member, club reporter and also Secretary. We were married in 2004 and some may remember us as the couple on their honeymoon at the Hobart convention. I have attended Nationals in 1996 and been to every one since 2001. I have enjoyed being involved in giving birth to Darwin. Yes it is an ongoing labour, one of enthusiasm, excitement, anticipation and belief in its success.I look forward to seeing many of you in Darwin. What a unique opportunity to visit a place many have only thought of going to, but to combine it with our activity with dancers from near and far takes my breath away!!! Come up and say hello, I would love to meet you as we ‘dance a while with a crocodile in 2011’.
BEV McLACHLAN (Round Dance Program)

RON and ROSLYN BURRETT (Decorations) Ron Burrett Started square dancing in the 50s. Stopped to build a house and raise a family. Went back in the early 70s. Was introduced to competition dancing and enjoyed it so much he became a caller to help teach and train children for competitions which he continued to do until 1997. During this time Ron was heavily involved with running the comps and was President for 4 years . He also ran clubs until 1997 when he decided to move to Queensland so transferred his club to another caller. Ron has been to every NSW State Square Dance Convention, of which he convened one in 1993, and was involved with the running of 2004. He has attended 33 Nationals and was on the committee of the 2006 in NSW and has been to 6 overseas conventions. He has earned his Silver Microphone Award and was made a Life Member of the Square Dance Society of NSW Inc. in 2004.
Roslyn Burrett Started dancing in the early 70s along with her family. Danced in competitions until 1997. Married Ron in 1990 and became heavily involved with running clubs and competitions. Helped run State Conventions in 1993 and 2004 and is the convenor for the coming one in 2009. Also on the committee of the National in 2006. Was granted Life Membership of State Society in 2004 and became President of same in 2007. Roslyn has attended 26 NSW State Conventions, 24 Nationals and 7 overseas. We are both looking forward to our time on the committee for Darwin when we will dance awhile with a crocodile in 2011.
NEV McLACHLAN (Board Representative)
KEVIN and CHRISTINE LUCAS (Marshals)
Christine (nee Higgins) started square dancing at 14 years old in 1974 at Wollongong Wanderers in Sydney with caller Terry Dodd. Over the following years all her immediate family members gave it a go, some lasting for years. After moving to Tasmania in 1983, Christine served as a state society delegate, committee member for State Conventions, and Treasurer for the 30th National held in Hobart in 1989. Moving to Queensland in 1993 meant sporadic attendance at dances, until taking Kevin to learn in 2004. After that there was no turning back as Kevin took to the activity like a duck out of water. Both love travelling and visiting clubs in other states, and for Kevin his first National was Gosford in 2006, for Christine the National in Darwin is very special as it is the only Australian Capital City she has never been to because there has never been a Convention there before.
JAMES and CLARE REID (Child Care)
James and Clare have volunteered to organise the child care for families who go to the Convention. They are uniquely qualified for this role since they have two young children of their own. They understand how important it is for us to provide an entertaining and enjoyable environment, so that our future dancers want to return every year to meet friends and make new ones.
The program is almost complete. When it is done, it will be posted onto the website as a Word document for those who are able to download it onto your i-phones, i-pads, etc. For those who don't have this technology, the program will also be put on the website for your interest. Printed programs will be available in your Convention packs, at the venue.
